20-fold increase in German vegan options

Ich Bin Veggie

Market research company Mintel reckon that the number of vegan-labelled meals and ‘meal centres’ (cafés and restaurants) in Germany have increased more than 20-fold since 2011. The increase for vegetarian foods and cafés is seven-fold.

Some seven per cent of Germans say they are vegetarian while a third say they are reducing the amount of red meat they eat, with 19 per cent incorporating more vegetarian foods into their diet. The figures for 16-24 year olds are 16 per cent and 33 per cent respectively.

Ich Bin Certain

Germany is to enact laws to ensure that foods claimed to be vegan really are – the first European country to do so.

They will create a clear and legally binding definition of ‘vegan’, ensuring that no animal products are used in manufacturing – no traces of honey, dairy, gelatine, insect colourings or L-cysteine (sometimes used in dough and made from duck feathers).

I wonder if our lot can find time to slot in something similar between debates on Trident, free schools and Boris as Foreign Secretary?
